What is Midjourney?

Midjourney is an AI image generation service created by Midjourney, Inc., an independent research lab founded by David Holz (co-founder of Leap Motion). It is widely considered to produce the most aesthetically pleasing AI-generated images, with a signature artistic quality that sets it apart.

Unlike Stable Diffusion (which you run locally) or DALL-E (which runs through an API), Midjourney operates primarily through Discord — you type prompts in a chat channel and the bot generates images for you. A web interface is also available for paid subscribers.

Version History

Midjourney v5 (March 2023)

A major leap in photorealism and prompt understanding. V5 produces much more realistic images, better hands, and follows prompts more literally than previous versions. It requires more detailed prompts as it applies less default styling.

Midjourney v5.2 (June 2023)

Improved aesthetics, sharper images, and better color. Introduced the "zoom out" feature for extending images beyond their borders, and a new --style raw parameter for less opinionated outputs.

Midjourney v6 (December 2023)

The latest major version with significantly improved prompt understanding, text rendering capability, and coherence. V6 understands natural language better and can render text within images more accurately.
